I am going to begin with the first movie released, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. But why was the first movie Episode IV? It is has been a controversial issue over the last few decades. When released, Episode IV was only titled Star Wars and George Lucas didn't actually think it would be such a hit. Once it took off, that is when Lucas began thinking of the rest of the story. He decided that IV, V and VI would be Luke's story. I, II and III would be the rise of Vader.
The beginning of the movie opens with a small
republic cruiser being chased by a huge Imperial Star Destroyer. On this ship,
we have Princess Leia with many rebel soldiers who are trying to escape
with the Death Star plans. The Death Star is a huge space station that the
Imperials are trying to build. The opening gets you excited and a little
anxious as the little cruiser is absorbed by the huge Star Destroyer. A group
of white armored soldiers burst into the ship, Storm Troopers! Killing many of
the rebel soldiers and destroying most of the ship. We are soon introduced to
one of the most iconic villains in all of movie history, Darth Vader. Princess
Leia is taken into captivity by Darth Vader. The movie continues focusing on
two droids, R2D2 and C3PO being shipped to a desolate, sand planet Tatooine. After
being abducted by strange cloaked aliens, our droid friends are introduced to
our main character and soon to our new hero, Luke Skywalker. We know Luke wants
to leave his home planet but he will get his wish soon. With the help of R2D2
running away, Luke meets one of the last Jedi knights in history, Obi Wan
Kenobi. Their mission will be to help Leia because they are here “only hope.”
The Storm Troopers have tracked down the droid to Tatooine and begin interrogating
the creatures of the planet and even Luke’s Aunt and Uncle. Luke and Obi Wan
meet two new additional character, Han Solo and Chewbacca who agree to take
them to Princess Leia’s home planet Alderaan. While our heroes go to Alderaan,
Darth Vader and the rest of the Imperials have shown Leia that the Death Star
is operational, and have destroyed her home planet, Alderaan. When our heroes arrive
to where the planet should be, it is gone! But our heroes soon come across a
giant moon, but wait, it is no moon… it is a space station! The Death Star. But
that’s as much complete detail as I will give, but the next hour is an epic
movie that transpires with a brilliant battle, dialogue and music. Our heroes
are able to rescue the princess, recover the Death Star plans and even destroy
the Death Star.
IMDb gives Star Wars an 8.7 out of 10. For me, I
would round up to an even 9 out of 10. For a Sci-Fi movie that was released in
1977, it is truly a epic and wonderful Sci-Fi movie. Even for being created so
long ago, it still trumps so many of new Sci-Fi movies created today. I hope
you enjoyed my short synopsis and review, I will see you back here for Star
Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.
